Malawi U17 Girls in Cosafa Semis

Malawi 12 (Rose Kabzere 23′ 50′ 55′ 59′ 65′, Faith Chinzimu 49′ 58′ 63′ 82, Chikondi Mgodi 53′, Leticia Chinyamula 79′, Annah Baziliyo 84) -0 Namibia

The Malawi U17 Girls team on Monday afternoon thrashed Namibia 12-0  at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe to qualify for the semifinal of the ongoing COSAFA Under 17 Girls’ Championship being played as part of the Region 5 Youth games

The Junior Scorchers looked  more determined to get a win from the first minute following their 4-1 defeat against South Africa in the opening match last Thursday.

Rose Kabzere opened the scoreshee at 23 minutes.

Coach Trevor Kajawa made an early Substitution at 30 minutes bringing in Chikondi Mgodi for Mary Chindeya, a change that brought some positives to the team.

Malawi came in with a different  approach in the second half making use of most of the chances and scored 11 goals in the last 45 minutes.

Rose Kabzere scored 5 goals, earning herself the player of the match  award. She now leads the scorers’ chart.

With the win, Malawi have finished second in Group A and will face group B winners, Zambia in the Semifinals.

Coach Trevor Kajawa was excited with the girls’ performance and said he is looking forward to the match against Zambia.

“Namibia gave us a tough time in the first half but we told the girls to build up their confidence in the second half and start scoring goals and they did it.

“We came with a bang after losing to South Africa and as Coach, I am very excited to beat Namibia by that score line with a team that we have built within fews weeks.

“We will face Zambia in the Semifinals and we are not afraid of them because we are also a good side so we are looking forward to the semis”, said Kajawa.
