Football Association of Malawi (FAM) was founded in 1966 as the governing body of football in Malawi and got affiliated to FIFA in 1967, to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in 1968 and later on to the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) in 1997. FAM is established in accordance with the Malawi National Council of Sports Act: Chapter 30.10 of the Laws of Malawi.

FAM as an institution is run by an elected body of Executive Committee members headed by a President. The tenure of office for the Executive Committee is 4 years. The Executive Committee members also serve on various sub-committee of the Football Association. The Executive arm of FAM is elected by the congress that constitutes 9 affiliates of FAM.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) is headquartered in Chiwembe Township, about 2 kilometers off – Illovo (Malawi) Sugar Ltd round-about in Limbe. Its offices are within the FIFA-funded Technical Centre. The infrastructure comprises of two football fields, a 26-room hostel, a conference center, an auditorium, office blocks, recreation rooms, a restaurant, and laundry.
