The Gift of the Givers Foundation has made a landmark contribution to women’s football in Malawi by partnering with the Football Association of Malawi (FAM). Through this two-year partnership, 2,000 Mina Silicon Menstrual Hygiene Cups valued at MK100 million will be distributed to women footballers across the country.
Gift of the Givers Country Director, Mrs. Sherifa Mia, said the initiativ was about empowering girls beyond football.
“Football is not only physical; it is also mental. These girls must feel confident when they step on the pitch. The menstrual hygiene cups are part of building that confidence,” she said.
Mia highlighted that one Mina Cup can last between five and ten years, making it a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to other sanitary products.
Receiving the donation, FAM President Fleetwood Haiya described the gesture as “timely and life-changing.”
“These cups will boost confidence among our players because they are sustainable, safe, and comfortable to use. This will not only improve performance but also encourage more girls to embrace football,” Haiya said.
He disclosed that the cups will directly benefit about 350 players in the NBM Women’s Premiership, 720 players in the regional division leagues, all levels of the national women’s teams—including the U20 squad preparing for World Cup qualifiers in South Sudan—as well as girls at the Luwinga Technical Centre Football Academy in Mzuzu.
Haiya further pointed out that the association will save resources previously spent on sanitary pads whenever the Scorchers were in camp, assuring Gift of the Givers of accountability in managing the donation.
“We know this is just the beginning of many good things to come. You have found a partner in us, one you will wish you had found long ago,” he said.
