Women’s U20 make WC return

The Malawi Under 20 National Women’s Football team will make a return to international football after being drawn against Zambia in the 2022 FIFA Under 20 World Cup Qualifiers.

The Junior Scorchers, who made their World Cup qualifiers debut against Zimbabwe last year, will join the competition from second round following a draw conducted at CAF Headquarters in Cairo.

Zambia will host the first leg between 23-25 September with the second leg set for 7-9 October 2021 in Blantyre.

The last time the two teams met was in a friendly match in Lusaka which the hosts won 1-0 as the Junior Scorchers were on their way to Zimbabwe.

Malawi lost 2-1 on aggregate to Zimbabwe but coach Maggie Chombo Sadik said they would like to go past the first round this time around.

“We are happy that we are back in the competition and we thank FAM for engaging the team again. Last year was a a learning curve for us. It was the first time for our players to play at that level but we were not that bad as we lost narrowly to Zimbabwe.

“This time around we will work hard to go further in the competition and we believe with a good plan everything is possible,” said Sadik.
