Songwe Border United and Extreme FC continued their tight race at the top of the NBS Bank National Division League after both registered wins in Matchweek Seven.
Songwe Border United beat Chilobwe United 2-0 at Karonga Stadium to move to 16 points, one ahead of second-placed Extreme FC, who edged Bangwe All Stars 1-0 at Owen Malijani Stadium in Mchinji.
Songwe took the lead in the 11th minute through Emmanuel Munthali, who was assisted by Tendai Phiri. Munthali then turned provider in the 37th minute, setting up Tendai Phiri to make it 2-0.
Extreme FC left it late against Bangwe All Stars, with Matthews Mtalakwesi scoring the only goal of the match after receiving a good pass from Limbani Kalumba to take the Mchinji-based side to 15 points.
At Rumphi Stadium, Mzuzu City Hammers recorded the biggest win of the weekend after thrashing Mighty Tigers 4-0 in a battle involving two sides that were relegated from the top flight last season.
The result condemned Tigers to remain in 10th position, with six points from one win, three draws and three defeats.
Mzuzu City Hammers opened the scoring in the 37th minute when Phillip Mtika headed home a fine cross from Hassan Luwembe before Christopher Chulu doubled the lead in first-half added time.
Six minutes after the restart, Mtika completed his brace after reacting well to a pass from Chulu. Chulu then also completed his brace in the 61st minute, with Mtika providing the assist.
The win moved Mzuzu City Hammers from ninth to sixth place, displacing Ntaja United, who lost 2-1 to FOMO FC at Balaka Stadium.
Ntaja took an early lead in the fourth minute through Hussein Sanudi, who finished from an intelligent cross by Adam Alieh.
FOMO equalised in the 57th minute when Sebastian Chinsomba tapped in from a Divason Daud effort before Shadreck Mikunde scored the winner in the 73rd minute with a beautiful header.
The result pushed the Mulanje-based side to fifth place from seventh with 11 points, level with Ndirande Stars. FOMO also remain the only unbeaten side in the National Division League.
On Saturday, Embangweni United beat Ndirande Stars 2-1 at Mzuzu Stadium to move to 13 points.
Embangweni opened the scoring two minutes after half-time through Robert Chipeta, but Ndirande Stars responded two minutes later through Rafick Alli, who was assisted by Moses Gunde.
Chipeta restored Embangweni’s lead in the 79th minute after Ndirande Stars failed to clear danger inside the box.
At Zomba Stadium, Namitete Zitha moved to eight points after a 1-1 draw with 11th-placed Changalume Barracks.
Namitete opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Thomas Mangwere lifted the ball over the Changalume defence for Howard Moses to finish.
Changalume equalised just after the restart when Amidu Mapira sent a perfect pass to Leo Kaira, who finished off a sweeping attack.
