Songwe Border United extended their lead at the top of the NBS Bank National Division League after beating Extreme FC 3-1 on Sunday afternoon to move to 13 points.
The result puts Songwe three points ahead of second-placed Embangweni United, who moved into the runners-up spot after beating Bangwe All Stars 2-0 at Rumphi Stadium on Friday.
Extreme FC remain third, while Ndirande Stars stay fourth after losing 2-1 to Mzuzu City Hammers at Rumphi Stadium.
Songwe took the lead in the 22nd minute through Emmanuel Munthali, who was assisted by Tendai Phiri. Dickson Mwangonde doubled the advantage in the 30th minute with a well-taken finish after being set up by Munthali.
Extreme pulled one back in first-half added time after they were awarded a free-kick just outside the box following a foul on Beston Jimu. Jimu stepped up and beat goalkeeper Abraham Mwandenga to make it 2-1.
Songwe restored their two-goal cushion in the 62nd minute when Mwangonde completed his brace from another Munthali assist.
At Owen Malijani Stadium, Namitete Zitha drew 1-1 with FOMO FC. The result gave Namitete their first draw of the season, but they remain 10th with four points, while FOMO maintained sixth place with seven points.
Namitete scored in the 13th minute through Alexander Cosmas, who finished from Yohane Kamwaza’s pass. FOMO equalised in the 87th minute through Chimwemwe Nyoni, who headed home from Pemphero Maoni’s assist.
On Saturday, Changalume Barracks and Mighty Tigers played out a 3-3 draw in a six-goal thriller at Zomba Stadium. The result left Changalume bottom with two points, while Tigers remained ninth with five points.
Changalume led 2-0 through Blessings Harawa’s seventh-minute opener and Hakim Mponda’s 26th-minute goal. Tigers responded through Madalitso Banda in the 64th minute before Harry Robert equalised in the 77th minute.
Banda then completed his brace in the 88th minute to put Tigers ahead, but Changalume fought back two minutes later through Maxwell Msowoya, who was assisted by Harawa.
At Rumphi Stadium, Ndirande Stars took the lead in the 24th minute through Rafiq Alli, but Mzuzu City Hammers equalised in the 33rd minute before Phillip Mtika scored the winner in the 41st minute.
At Balaka Stadium, Ntaja United moved from eighth to fifth after beating Chilobwe United 1-0 through Adam Alieh’s thunderous 85th-minute strike. Ntaja now have eight points.
