Leaders of the National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Women’s Premiership, Silver Strikers Ladies maintained their 100% winning record in five games after beating Mighty Wanderers Queens 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Mpira Stadium.
They have amassed 15 points — three ahead of runners-up, Ascent Soccer, who also retain their spot after beating FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Women 3-1 on Sunday at Ascent Ground.
Kukoma Ntopwa Women got beaten 2-0 by MDF Lionesses on Saturday at Champions Stadium but also maintained their 3rd position on the log table with 9 points, sharing with Mighty Wanderers Queens.
MDF Lionesses’ result earned them 8 points and saw them occupy 5th place, moving from 6th and displacing FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Women, who have 7 points.
At Ascent Ground, the hosts went in the lead in the 6th minute through Mayamiko Mkandawire after being assisted by Fatima Lali but FCB Nyasa Big Bullets equalised four minutes later through Laina James assisted by Juuria Yiannakis.
Mayamiko Mkandawire then claimed her brace assisted by Leticia Chinyamula to increase Ascent Soccer’s lead in the 38th and eight minutes after half time break, Alefa Chimbeta put the match beyond Bullets Women’s reach after capitalising on a poor back pass by the visitors’ defence.
At Mpira Stadium, Silver Strikers Ladies’ lone goal came from Deborah Henry in the 22nd minute when Ireen Khumalo’s free kick had hit the post and Henry headed the rebound towards goal which was parried away by goalkeeper Chauluka but she scored on the second attempt.
Playing on the midday on Sunday, Civil Service Women beat Topik Academy 4-0 at Mzuzu Stadium, piling more woes on the bottom of the table side, who are without a point so far after five games.
Civil Service Women went on the onslaught, winning two consecutive corner kicks as early as the 3rd minute and two minutes later before finding the net in the 6th through Vitumbiko Mkandawire after a blunder from the home team’s defender who failed to clear the ball.
Two minutes later Topik Academy goalkeeper failed to clear a volley from Glory Sichinga after she received a pass from Atupele Mpoma to make it 2-0 as the home side was kept under siege.
The hosts managed to win their first corner in the 21st minute which Civil Service Women easily cleared as they tried to shrug off stiff attacks but they conceded again in the 26th
Martha Christopher received a good pass at the edge of the box from Vitumbiko Mkandawire but was fouled by Chrissy Munthali and captain Jessie Yosefe curved the resultant freekick beyond goalkeeper Luthere’s reach.
Emily Samuel got herself on the scorecard as she increased Civil Service Women’s lead in the 36th after heading in a corner from Jessie Yosefe — resting the score line at 4-0 at halftime.
As second half resumed, Topik Academy made three changes by replacing goalkeeper Verepi Luthere for Chrissy Chirambo and Immaculate Nyirenda, Grace Chiumia for Anita Banda and Anna Phiri while Civil Women pulled out Atupele Mpoma and Martha Christopher for Fasileni Kazembe and Mirriam Josiki.
The changes seemed to have rejuvenated the hosts as they challenged their opponents that led to a counter attack in the 56th when Tiwonge Chirwa flighted a cross into the path of Lita Mwale but shed headed wide.
They fought on but couldn’t find the net as a consolation, leaving themselves at the bottom without a point in which they have just scored two goals and conceded 22.
Two teams have registered their first wins in this inaugural premiership — Civil Service Women beating Topik Academy and MDF Lionesses, who triumphed 2-0 over Kukoma Ntopwa Women to amass their 8 points.
