Leaders Silver Strikers Ladies ended the first round of the National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Women’s Premiership in dominant fashion after thrashing bottom-placed MK Academy 7–0 on Sunday at Silver Stadium to maintain their unbeaten run in Malawi’s inaugural top-tier women’s football league.
The Bankers capped off the first round with 27 points, seven clear of second-placed Ascent Soccer, who were held to a 1–1 draw by Kukoma Ntopwa Women at Ascent Ground.
At Silver Stadium, league top scorer Deborah Henry was once again the star of the show, netting four goals, with Wezie Mvula and Chikondi Gondwe also on target, alongside an own goal from Tiyamike Banda. The result leaves MK Academy in 9th place with just 3 points at the halfway mark.
Henry now leads the Golden Boot race with 14 goals, ahead of Ascent’s Mayamiko Mkandawire (8), Leticia Chinyamula (6), and Kukoma Ntopwa’s Kondawo Banda (5), who shares the tally with Mighty Wanderers Queens’ Tawina Kawaga.
In the Sunday fixture, Silver opened the scoring in the 11th minute through Henry, before Mvula doubled the lead with a thunderous free kick in the 24th. MK’s Tiyamike Banda then conceded an own goal four minutes later to give the hosts a 3–0 halftime lead.
After the break, Silver continued their onslaught — Henry adding her second and third goals in the 52nd and 84th minutes before rounding off her quadruple four minutes later. She was deservedly named Player of the Match.
At Ascent Ground, the hosts were forced to share the spoils after a 1–1 draw with Kukoma Ntopwa Women.
Ntopwa took the lead in the 16th minute through Takondwa Gamboleni, who pounced after goalkeeper Patricia Kachepa spilled Mary Chideya’s shot.
Ascent equalised in the 35th minute via a Leticia Chinyamula penalty after Annie Botha handled inside the box. Despite several chances in the second half, the match ended level — a result that keeps Ascent second on 20 points, while Ntopwa stay sixth on 13.
At Mpira Stadium, Mighty Wanderers Queens let a two-goal lead slip as MDF Lionesses fought back to draw 2–2.
Tawina Kawaga opened the scoring in the 41st minute, before setting up Funny Moyo to make it 2–0 early in the second half.
However, the Lionesses mounted a comeback through Sabina Thom (67’) and Fazilah Chiyembekezo (82’) to secure a point.
MDF Lionesses close the round in third place with 15 points, while Wanderers sit fifth with 14 — level with fourth-placed FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Women.
At Nankhaka Stadium, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Women and Civil Service United Women played to a 1–1 draw.
Bullets went ahead in the 17th minute through Monalisa Mhango, before Vitumbiko Mkandawire equalised for Civil Service in the 50th.
Civil Service end the round seventh with 10 points, while Bullets sit fourth on 14.
In Mzuzu, Topik Academy earned only their second point of the season following a 1–1 draw with city rivals Moyale Sisters.
Moyale led at halftime through Naomie Chinthenga, but substitute Funny Zuza equalised in the 74th minute to rescue a point for Topik, who remain bottom of the table.
