Silver Strikers Ladies, who suffered their first defeat of the season last week in the National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Women’s Premiership, returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion after thrashing Moyale Sisters 6–0 on Sunday morning at Mzuzu Stadium.
The victory saw the leaders restore their four-point lead at the top of the table, which had been cut to just one point on Saturday when second-placed Ascent Soccer defeated Mighty Wanderers Queens 3–1 at Ascent Ground to move to 26 points.
League top scorer Deborah Henry opened the scoring in the 9th minute and doubled her tally in the 51st to take her goal total to 17 this season, tightening her grip on the Golden Boot race.
Moyale Sisters struggled to contain Silver’s relentless attacking play, with the visitors showing clear intent from the first whistle. Henry’s opener came after a well-worked move involving Ireen Khumalo, who delivered a precise assist for the striker to finish confidently.
Grace Kakangula made it 2–0 in the 24th minute after outrunning the Moyale defence to finish off a through ball from Chikondi Gondwe, sending Silver into halftime with a comfortable lead.
Five minutes after the restart, Wezzie Mvula scored directly from a corner to extend the lead before Henry struck again a minute later, this time from Mvula’s cutback. Mvula then turned provider again when her corner in the 57th minute found Yamikani Mhango, who headed home for 5–0.
Mhango completed her brace in the 67th minute with a powerful effort that struck the upright before crossing the line after an assist from Tiwonge Phiri.
Silver nearly added a seventh in the 80th minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside. The match ended 7–0, with Wezzie Mvula crowned Player of the Match for her outstanding all-round display.
At Ascent Ground on Saturday, the hosts secured a vital 3–0 victory over Wanderers Queens. Alepha Chimbeta scored in the 5th minute and added her second two minutes before halftime. Eight minutes after the break, Mariam Mnenula capitalised on defensive confusion to score the third after being set up by Chimbeta.
Wanderers pulled one back in the 78th minute through Tawina Kawaga, who beat two defenders before firing past the advancing goalkeeper. Chimbeta was named Player of the Match.
At Champions Stadium, Civil Service Women came from behind to beat MDF Lionesses 2–1 thanks to a brace from Jessy Yosefe, who was also named Player of the Match. The Lionesses took the lead in the 27th minute through Doreen Dickson, who headed in a corner delivered by Sabina Thom.
Civil equalised four minutes before halftime when Yosefe headed in a free kick from Jacklin Kamputa. She struck again in the 80th minute, finishing off a corner from Ana Baziliyo to seal the comeback victory.
At Mzuzu Stadium, Topik Academy and Kukoma Ntopwa played out an exciting 2–2 draw. Topik took the lead in the 6th minute through Ireen Nyirenda before Ntopwa equalised six minutes later when Sarah Mulimbika set up Takondwa Gambuleni.
Topik regained the lead through Caroline Phiri in the 35th minute, but Ntopwa equalised on the stroke of halftime when Funny Magombo headed in from an Olivia Phikani corner. Mulimbika earned the Player of the Match award for her outstanding performance.
On Friday, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Women moved into third place after beating MK Academy 2–0, with Lyna James named Player of the Match. Vanessa Issa scored in the 5th minute after capitalising on defensive confusion, and Lindah Nyangu sealed the victory in the 69th minute with a near-post finish following an assist from Mlenzo.
