Scorchers Stun Copper Queens

The Malawi National women’s team on Tuesday came from behind to secure a 3-2 victory against Zambia’s Copper Queens in their second friendly match played at Reiz Arena in Lusaka.

This was Malawi’s first win over their arch rivals in their own territory after three straight losses.

Following Sunday’s 2-0 loss, coming after 3-2 and 7-0 defeats in the 2022 and 2013 AFCON qualifiers respectively, Malawi went into the match searching for their first win in Lusaka.

But Zambia looked destined for a fourth win as they took an early lead in the first half through Rachael Kundanaji in the 5th minute.

In response, Scorchers Head Coach Lovemore Fazili made tactical changes, introducing Rose Kabzere and Sabina Thom for Sarah Mulimbika and Caroline Mathyola at the 27th minute.

Kabzere made an instant impact, leveling the scores in the 47th minute after a defensive miscommunication from Zambia.

Ten minutes later, Faith Chimzimu put Malawi ahead with a brilliant solo effort from midfield.

Sabina Thom gave the Scorchers a two goal cushion after finishing off a well-placed pass from Tabitha Chawinga in the 58 minute

Zambia pulled one back through Rachael Nachula, at 80 minutes but Malawi held on for the win.

Speaking after the match, Fazili praised his team’s performance and fighting spirit for coming from behind and win the match.

“The players showed great fighting spirit from the start, and we ended up on the winning side”

“This game has helped us assess the team’s shape and address some of our weaknesses”

“Zambia gave us a good challenge, and we take many positives from this match.”
