Scorchers set for COSAFA opener against SA

Malawi national women’s football team begin their 2023 Hollywoodbets Cosafa Women’s Championship campaign when they take on hosts South Africa  at the Lucas Mori Stadium in Atteridgeville on Wednesday afternoon and Coach Lovemore Fazili says his charges are ready for the match.

Following a disappointing 2022 campaign in which they bowed out of group stages, the Scorchers will be looking forward to rekindling their 2021 performance which saw them beat South Africa for the first time in the Semifinal to reach their first ever  final.

Fazili says his charges are prepared for the match though it will not be easy facing the hosts who are fresh from their historic exploits at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

“ We are very prepared for the match. It is the opening match and very important to our campaign as it will define our destiny and thus the need to get a result.

“ It will not be an easy match considering that they will be playing in front of their home fans for the first time since they came back from the World Cup.

“ But we are not scared. We have been in  this situation before.  In our last meeting in 2021 we defied  the odds to be beat them for the first time and we will be looking forward to do the same on Wednesday,” said Fazili.

In other group A fixture Madagascar  will face Eswatini in a launch hour kickoff.

Malawi will face  Eswatini on October 7 before winding up the group stages with a fixture against Madagascar of October 10.
