Scorchers lose to Banyana Banyana

Scorchers gave away a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 to South Africa in their second international friendly match played at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

This was three days after Malawi lost 3-0 in the first match .

The Scorchers had a chance to take an early lead in the first minute through Vanessa Chikupira whose strike went off target before the hosts came back with a series of attacks as they searched for a leading goal.

Malawi kept on frustrating the hosts’ goal attempts as the first half ended goalless.

Malawi took the lead 13 minutes after the break through Vanessa Chikupira who connected a Ireen Khumalo’s corner kick.

Banyanya Banyana equalized through Hilda Magaia at … minute before Amogelang Motau’s got the winner with a free- kick goal three minutes to full time.

Despite the setbacks Scorchers Coach Lovemore Fazili says he is confident he is building a strong squad for Women Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Angola in October.

Fazili said there are a number of lessons that the team has learnt in the two matches which they have to build on as they continue preparing for Angola.

“The game was fair enough and the players tried their best looking at how we played in the first match.

“We have learnt alot of lessons in the two games. We have a challenge in defending set pieces and this will be our main focus during sessions so that we avoid giving away goals.

“The team is very good though we were weak in front as some key players in front were not available. We are sure that we have built a good team for the October assignments because we will be a full Squad then,” said Fazili.

LINEUP: Mercy Sikelo, Chimwemwe Madise, Asimenye Simwaka, Tendai Sani, Sabina Thom (Chisomo Banda 63′), Vanessa Chikupira, Letticia Chinyamula, Ireen Khumalo, Fanny Magombo (Jessie Yosefe 63′), Rose Alufandika, Bernadettar Mkandawire.
