Scorchers get their plots from President Chakwera

Ministry of Lands, in partnership with Ministry of Sports, has officially handed over plots in Area 45 in Lilongwe to the Malawi Women’s
National Football Team, the Scorchers, following President Lazarus Chakwera’s directive.
This recognition is in response to the Scorchers’ outstanding performance in winning the 2023 Hollywoodbets Cosafa Women’s Championship Cup which was held in South Africa.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Chikumbutso Mtumodzi, Principal Secretary responsible for Finance and Administration in the
Ministry of Youth and Sports, expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Lands for implementing the president’s directive.
He stated that the government through Ministry of Sports, is fully committed to supporting sportspersons in the country.
Mtumodzi said that the plots have been provided free of charge as a reflection of the nation’s deep appreciation for the Scorchers’ achievement and to inspire young Malawians.
Director of Administration in the Ministry of Lands, encouraged the Scorchers to continue working hard and bring more trophies to Malawi.
However, he advised against selling the land, as it is intended to remain a memorable symbol of their contribution to sports.
Chairperson of the National Women’s Football Association, Adelaide Migogo, urged cooperatives to support the Scorchers in developing structures on the land, as this would give them a sense of ownership.
She also commended the President for fulfilling his promise, which has motivated the Scorchers to pursue even greater achievements.
