Scorchers drawn against South Africa in Cosafa

The Malawi National Women’s Football team will face defending champions South Africa in the 2021 Cosafa Women’s Championship scheduled for September 15-26 in Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa.

The Scorchers were drawn in Group A, which also has Angola and Mozambique during the draw conducted on Thursday morning.

Malawi lost 6-2 to South Africa in the semifinals of last year’s edition.

This year’s competition will attract 12 teams which have been drawn into three groups of four teams each with the top team in each group, as well as the best-placed runner-up advancing to the semifinals.

2020 runners up Botswana are in Group B alongside Zimbabwe and East African guests Tanzania and South Sudan while Zambia, Namibia, Eswatini and Uganda are in Group C.

The competition will also act as preparations for Scorchers’ 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations Qualifying campaign as they face Zambia in October.

FAM Competitions and Communications Director Gomezgani Zakazaka said the team’s programme will be announced soon.

“Currently we are in the process of finalising the recruitment of the team’s head coach after advertising for the post a month ago. We hope to finish the process in good time before the COSAFA,” said Zakazaka.
