This year’s NBS Bank Charity Shield proceeds for the 2023 edition will be used to construct improved ventilated latrines at Kanjuwi and Kamphedza primary schools in Salima.
Red Cross Malawi communications specialist Felix Washon disclosed this on Wednesday after NBS Bank and FAM made a symbolic presentation of K43 million at Sunbird Mount Soche.
The funds were raised during this years NBS bank Charity Shield match between Silver Strikers and FCB Nyasa Big Bullets in March.
“We are constructing nine latrines in three blocks, including two change rooms. One block will have four rooms, three for defecation and the fourth for menstrual hygiene management otherwise known as changing room for girls,” he said.
Washoni said the sanitary facilities will benefit 1 245 pupils at Kanjuwi Primary and 375 pupils at Kamphedza Junior Primary.
NBS Bank plc chief executive officer Kwanele Ngwenya said they are happy that their football support has been making an impact in the lives of the general public for the three years they have been bankrolling the Charity Shield.
“This sponsorship perfectly aligns with our strategic goals of enhancing brand visibility, engaging with current and potential customers, and reinforcing our commitment to community development,” he said.
FAM president Fleetwood Haiya said they are happy the Charity Shield continues to make a great impact on the people’s lives and NBS Bank’s support has been very instrumental.
This year’s edition raised K43.6 million and it was meant to be invested in the education sector through the Malawi Red Cross as the technical implementing partners.
Bullets won the shield for the seventh consecutive year after beating Silver Strikers 7-6 on post-match penalties following a goalless draw in regulation time.
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) introduced the Charity Shield in 2016 as flagship corporate social responsibility (CSR) program aimed at mobilizing the football fraternity and the public to raise funds and awareness for charitable causes.
