Red Lions beat FOMO FC 2-0 at Balaka Stadium yesterday to keep pace with NBS Bank National Division League (NDL) leaders, Mitundu Baptist tying at 12 points but Mitundu, who triumphed 1-0 over Chilumba Barracks FC, at the top due to goal difference.
After Week 5 the intent has now been shown that the title race and the fight for promotion into the TNM Super League is going to be intense as another contender, Namitete Zitha, who drew 0-0 with Baka City at Civo Stadium, maintained their 3rd place with 10 points.
Namitete are one point ahead of 4th-placed Bangwe All Stars, who beat Ndirande Stars 3-1 at Mpira Stadium and while Baka’s 0-0 result against Namitete Zitha leaves them on 5th place — sharing 9 points with Bangwe All Stars, who are on 4th.
This afternoon, 11th-placed Mchinji Villa face Chintheche United (7th with 7 points) while Ntaja United (6th/7pts) are up against table anchors Jenda United 12th/0pts).
Meanwhile, Mitundu Baptist’s Rahim Mtondera, who scored the all-important winner against Chilumba Barracks from the penalty spot in 90+1 minutes, is still the top scorer with 7 goals scored so far in the race for the Golden Boot.
He is followed by Bangwe All Stars’ Madalitso Safuli on 4 goals who scored in the 3-1 win over Ndirande Stars alongside Madalitso Geoffrey and Dyson Moffart.
Three other contenders for the Golden Boot at 3 goals apiece are Matorino Clement (Chilumba Barracks); Rashid Chiromo (FOMO FC) and Abel Gerald (Red Lions).
