The line-up for the Presidential Women’s National Cup final is now complete after DD Sunshine emerged champions of the Central Region on Sunday.
DD Sunshine beat their Capital City rivals Skippers 4-2 on post-match penalties at Nankhaka Stadium in Lilongwe.
In regulation time, the match ended goalless.
DD Sunshine now join Blantyre Zero from the South and Super Dynamos who qualified from the Southern and Northern regions respectively.
The national finals will be held in Lilongwe on July 17.
Eluby Botomani, Madina Ngulube, Fanny Mwale and Sabina Thom converted their spots kicks for DD Sunshine while Bibisha Sonke and Tifa Malunjika scored for Skippers.
Skippers’ Shilla Dimba’s spotkick was saved by Sunshine ‘keeper Alice Msiska who was named player of the tournament while Linda Kasenda’s penalty went over the bar.
Nevertheless, Kasenda won the Golden Boot Award with 15 goals.
This was the second consecutive defeat for Skippers at the hands of Sunshine in a final match having lost 1-0 in the FAM/Fifa Cup last year.
In a post match interview, Sunshine coach Andrew ‘Aluki’ Chikhosi, said they are looking forward to represent the region successfully at the national finals while his Skippers counterpart Lyton Mangani, struggled to come to terms with reality.
“It’s painful to lose twice to the same team in the finals. We could have killed the game in regulation time but we wasted a lot of chances. Penalties are unpredictable. Anyway, we are wishing our friends all the best at the national finals,” he said.
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) vice-president James Mwenda said he was impressed with the standard of play and pledged continued support for women football.
