After a two-week break to accommodate Castel Challenge Cup fixtures, the NBS Bank National Division League (NDL) returns this weekend with a headline derby as log leaders Red Lions host 8th-placed Ntaja United on Sunday at Balaka Stadium.
With only seven matches remaining in the inaugural second-tier season, every point now carries enormous weight. Red Lions sit firmly at the top with 36 points, seven ahead of second-placed Baka City (29pts), who welcome bottom-placed Jenda United (5pts) on Saturday at Karonga Stadium.
Third-placed Namitete Zitha (26pts) will also be at home on Saturday as they host 9th-placed Chilumba Barracks (19pts) at Mchinji Community Ground.
Jenda United face a near-impossible task to avoid relegation, as they must collect maximum points in all their remaining fixtures, starting with a difficult trip to Baka City. Their opponents, Baka City, still harbour hopes of closing the gap on leaders Red Lions should the Balaka-based side slip in the run-in.
However, Red Lions appear too disciplined and focused to squander their advantage as they target a return to the TNM Super League, which they were relegated from three seasons ago.
Just above Jenda on 11th place are Mchinji Villa (15pts), who host 5th-placed Bangwe All Stars (24pts) on Sunday at Mchinji Community Ground. Meanwhile, 10th-placed Chintheche United (18pts) travel to Maliri for a tricky assignment against 4th-placed Mitundu Baptist (25pts).
The relegation battle remains tense, with three teams sitting dangerously close to the drop zone: Ntaja United (8th/20pts), Ndirande Stars (7th/22pts) and FOMO FC (6th/23pts). Ndirande Stars host FOMO FC on Sunday at Mpira Stadium in a match where a win for either side could significantly boost their survival chances.
Ten NDL teams return to league action buoyed by their qualification into the FDH Bank Cup Round of 32. These include Red Lions, Namitete Zitha, Mitundu Baptist, Bangwe All Stars, FOMO FC, Ndirande Stars, Ntaja United, Chilumba Barracks, Chintheche United and Mchinji Villa.
Baka City and Jenda United remain the only NDL sides eliminated during regional qualifiers, falling to Chibavi Real Stars and Lufita respectively.
As the season approaches its climax, the race for promotion and the fight for survival promise an exciting finish, with momentum from the FDH Bank Cup expected to influence performances across the league.
