NBS Bank has increased its sponsorship for the 2026 Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Charity Shield to K100 million, up from K60 million last year.
The flagship event is scheduled for Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe this Saturday, featuring Super League champions Mighty Wanderers and Castel Challenge Cup winners FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.
Speaking during the unveiling ceremony in Lilongwe, NBS Bank Head of Marketing Frank Magombo said the investment goes beyond football and focuses on long-term community impact.
“We are particularly excited that this project is not just impactful, but scalable, offering a model that can be replicated across the country. At NBS Bank, we are intentional about supporting initiatives that deliver sustainable, long-term value,” said Magombo.
He added that the bank remains committed to supporting the Charity Shield as a platform that unites communities.
“This partnership reflects NBS Bank’s belief that football is a powerful platform for national unity and meaningful change,” he said.
Proceeds from the 2026 Charity Shield will be channelled towards the Green Girls Boarding initiative at Emvuyeni Community Day Secondary School in Mzimba District, in partnership with Plan International Malawi. The project is expected to benefit 500 learners and focuses on clean cooking solutions and renewable energy to create a safer and more sustainable learning environment.
Magombo said the initiative aligns with the bank’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) priorities.
FAM First Vice President Madalitso Kuyera commended NBS Bank for increasing the sponsorship, describing it as a strong commitment to football and community development.
“This contribution is not merely a financial commitment; it is a powerful statement of belief in the unifying and transformative power of football. The Charity Shield is more than a football match. It is a tradition, a symbol, and a purpose-driven platform,” said Kuyera.
He added that the initiative continues to transform lives beyond the pitch.
“It has evolved into a vehicle of hope, turning the passion of the beautiful game into tangible impact for our communities,” he said.
Proceeds from the 2025 Charity Shield were used to install a solar-powered water system at Namanolo Health Centre in Balaka District.
NBS Bank has now sponsored the Charity Shield for five consecutive years. FCB Nyasa Big Bullets remain the most successful team in the competition with seven titles, while Mighty Wanderers are still chasing their first. Silver Strikers are the current holders after winning the 2025 edition on penalties at Bingu National Stadium.
