After a short break to accommodate the Tri-Nation Tournament hosted by the Football Association of Malawi during the FIFA international window, the National Bank of Malawi Women’s Premiership resumes on Saturday with a fierce city derby and a clash of the title contenders.
League leaders Silver Strikers Ladies, who sit on 30 points, host their city rivals and second-placed Ascent Soccer at Silver Stadium. The match carries double significance: Silver will be looking to extend their lead at the top, while Ascent aim to cut the gap to just one point.
The encounter promises high intensity as Silver look to maintain their charge despite having seen their perfect first-round run halted by MDF Lionesses, who beat them 2–1 in the opening match of the second round. Silver responded emphatically with a 6–0 victory over Moyale Sisters, while Ascent have also won both their second round fixtures.
Silver remain the league’s most prolific side with 35 goals scored and seven conceded. Seventeen of those goals have come from Golden Boot frontrunner Deborah Henry. Ascent, on the other hand, have scored 25 goals and conceded six from eight wins, two draws and one loss, setting up a must-watch derby.
Another key fixture sees third-placed FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Women face fourth-placed MDF Lionesses at Mpira Stadium. Both teams are tied on 18 points but are separated by goal difference. Bullets have scored 10 goals and conceded seven from five wins, three draws and three losses. Lionesses have scored 19 and conceded nine, also from five wins, three draws and three losses.
Fifth-placed Mighty Wanderers Queens, who have 17 points, host bottom-of-the-table Topik Academy at Kamuzu Stadium. Topik have accumulated their three points from three draws and have conceded a league-high 38 goals while scoring six. Wanderers, with five wins, two draws and four losses, are targeting a top-three push, while Topik will be fighting for pride as they search for their first win away from home.
Civil Service Women, who are sixth with 16 points and also eyeing a top-three finish, host eighth-placed Moyale Sisters at Civo Stadium. Moyale have five points from one win and two draws. Seventh-placed Kukoma Ntopwa Women, on 15 points, take on relegation-threatened MK Academy, who sit ninth with four points, at Mpira Stadium in the early fixture.
