Mighty Tigers Top NDL Table After Matchweek One

Mighty Tigers finished Matchweek One of the NBS Bank National Division League at the summit of the table on goal difference after edging Chilobwe United 3-2 at Mpira Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Tigers joined Extreme FC, Mzuzu City Hammers and Embangweni United on three points after the opening round of fixtures, but their victory over Chilobwe United gave them the advantage at the top of the 12-team standings.

At Mpira Stadium, Tigers secured their win through goals from Kondwani Langa, James Tambwali and an own goal by Chilobwe United’s Sylvester Phiri Saizi. Chilobwe responded through Madalitso Chinsomba and Hanif Jafari, but Tigers held on to claim maximum points.

At Balaka Stadium, Ntaja United and Songwe Border played out an entertaining 2-2 draw. Hussein Sanudi scored twice for Ntaja United, while Emmanuel Munthali and another first half goal ensured Songwe Border left with a point.

In another Sunday fixture, FOMO FC and Ndirande Stars settled for a goalless draw at Mulanje Park.

Saturday’s action saw Mzuzu City Hammers begin their push for an immediate return to the elite league with a 2-1 win over Bangwe All Stars at Chitipa Stadium. Gerald Ngwira and Madalitso Mwachumu scored for the Hammers, while Seleman Musa pulled one back for Bangwe All Stars.

At Zomba Stadium, newly promoted Embangweni United marked their debut in the second-tier league with a 1-0 victory over Changalume Barracks, courtesy of an early strike from Robert Chipeta.

Extreme FC were the first side to collect maximum points after beating Namitete Zitha 1-0 during the season launch at Owen Malijani Stadium in Mchinji.
