Media Release: FAM Executive Committee Meeting resolutions

Pursuant to Article 41 of the FAM Statutes (2019), the Football Association of Malawi Executive Committee (“the Committee”) held its Second 2024 Executive Committee meeting on 27th April 2024 at Sunbird Livingstonia Hotel in Salima. Various issues that are critical to Transforming the Game of Football in Malawi were discussed. Some of the key resolutions and approvals made during the meeting include: –

Technical Matters

  1. The Committee resolved that Junior Men’s National Teams should camp in the month of July 2024 in preparations for the Cosafa Tournament.
  2. The Committee resolved that the Scorchers should play international friendly game(s) during the July 2024 FIFA Women’s International Window; and that all National Teams should always be active and play friendly games during all available FIFA Windows, funds permitting.
  3. The Committee resolved that FAM should proceed with an expression of interest to host the Cosafa Women’s U20 tournament planned for July this year and further proceed to engage Government for authorization of the same.
  4. The Committee resolved that in collaboration with Government and Stadium Management, Bingu National Stadium pitch should be maintained and kept in good condition in readiness of Flames 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifies in June 2024.
  5. The Committee resolved that FAM, in liaison with Ministry of Sports, should acquire new and modern benches for Bingu National Stadium.
  6. The Committee resolved to take advantage of the proposed hosting of COSAFA Women U20 to train Malawian referees in VAR using the regional body’s equipment.
  7. The Committee resolved that Football academy registration processes should undergo thorough consultation with stakeholders before it is rolled out.
  8. The Committee resolved that Luwinga Inclusive Academy should open in September in line with national school calendar.

Commercial and Marketing Matters 

  1. The Committee resolved to adopt the final Football Calendar with changes for COSAFA Cup (to be held from 12th to 23rd June), Women’s and Beach Soccer Competitions.
  2. The Committee resolved that a new National Teams’ jersey project be launched and further that FAM should explore securing a new technical partner for the Flames and Scotchers merchandise.
  3. The Committee resolved as follows for Mpira Village at Chiwembe: –
    1. Recruitment of a Hospitality Management Professional for the MpiraHotel
    2. Automation of all office systems,
    3. Installation of CCTV Cameras at all Mpira Village strategic places, and
    4. General Maintenance of Mpira village facilities (backup power, painting etc.) using FIFA Forward 2 funds.
  1. The Committee resolved that as one way of controlling the flow of information in and outside FAM, the Communication Policy be enforced at all levels (Exco, Staff, Affiliates and Standing Committees).
  2. The Committee resolved that FAM should, in consultation with Government as Stadium owner, procure metal barriers for access control into various Stadiums.
  3. The Committee resolved that FAM should engage partners and stakeholders of Mpira TV for status appraisal and consult on review of the business model.
  4. The Committee resolved that FAM should hold Annual Football Awards at the end of every season in collaboration with other competition sponsors.  Finance and Administration matters

Finance and Administration matters

  1. The Committee resolved to adopt the 2024 Budget and the same to be presented for approval at the FAM AGM in June 2024.
  2. The Committee resolved to carry out a Functional Review at the FAM Secretariat to enhance effective and efficient delivery of FAM’s mandate in line with the New FAM Strategic Plan.
  1. The Committee resolved to officially launch the New FAM Strategic Plan before end of June 2024.

General Matters

  1. The Committee resolved that Mr. Nthukwa Shawa be appointed as CAF National Safety and Security Officer.
  2. The Committee resolved that the Nsanje Stadium Project should commence in May 2024.
  3. The Committee resolved that new vehicles should be procured for the Technical Department and all FAM Directors and disposal of all old vehicles as per the Disposal of Assets Policy.
  4. The Committee resolved that Chilomoni Stadium be rehabilitated using FIFA Forward 2.0 funds.
  5. The Committee resolved that FAM should engage a consultant to review Club Licensing, provide recommendations to FAM on best practices and further to offer training to FAM staff members and Super league clubs.
  6. The Committee resolved to adopt CAF recommendation that FAM should enhance the Club Licensing Department by recruiting a Club Licensing Officer.
