Mario says Lesotho friendly crucial

Flames head coach Mario Marinica says this afternoon international friendly match against Lesotho at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe is crucial as he is trying to put his players into shape in preparation for Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Flames will face Egypt in Cairo and at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe between March 20-28.

The Romanian tactician said most of the players have not been active since October which has affected their fitness.

He said, “We are looking forward to the Lesotho game to try to get the players into a better shape. We want try to get the players gain match fitness. Some of the players haven’t played since October while some since December.”

The coach said he will not put pressure on the players since the aim of the match is to keep the players in shape.

Marinica explained: “I don’t have much expectation. This is an international friendly and we want to give a chance to as many players as possible.”

The coach summoned 26 players for the camp which was done in two phases.

The first stage was from Monday, 5th February to 8th February and thereafter the players were released to go to their clubs.

The second phase was from 14th to 24th February.

But Marinica said his plans were disrupted by absence of some players who were with clubs while others were unsettled.

He said: “It was a little bit difficult because initially, we had all the players, but the other players had to go back to their clubs.

“So it was a little bit disruptive but we still have some time before the Egypt Afcon qualifier.”
