Malawi women’s U20 beat Central African Republic

Malawi Under-20 Women’s National Football Team is a step into the second round of the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup Qualifier after beating Central African Republic (CAR) 3-1 at the Bingu National Stadium on Sunday.

Malawi controlled the game for long durations and deservedly led 3-0 at half time.

Fatima Lali put the hosts ahead just after a minute into the game. She made it 2-0 in the 16th minutes and Olivia Phikani goal in additional time gave Malawi a three- goal cushion leading into halftime.

It was bad day at work for (CFA) goalkeeper Naomi Olive Ngonia.

Syliviane Passib Sate pulled one back for the visitors in the 78 minute. But the Maggie Chombo-coached side held on to the sweet victory and will go to CAR in the return leg on May 18 with an advantage.

Following their dominant 3-1 home victory this Sunday afternoon in the African qualifier of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2026 against Central African Republic, Malawi Women’s U-20 national football team will travel to the Cameroon for the away return match with high hopes of reaching the next round.

Head coach, Maggie Chombo praised her players for their fighting spirit, emphasizing that the early goals they scored were part of the game plan.

“Our plan was to score early, and we succeeded with two goals in the first 15 minutes. The third goal before halftime was crucial,” said the coach.

With passionate support from the fans who filled the stands, the young Scorchers made a dream start to the game in which Fatima Lali opened the scoring within the first two minutes before doubling her tally in the 16th minute with a powerful header from inside the penalty area.

The only blight of the afternoon was a red card shown to goalkeeper Emily Nkhwazi in the 26 minute and she was replaced by Ireen Sibande.

A total of four nations will represent Africa at global showpiece set for August next year.

The return leg will be played on May 18, in Banqui.
