Malawi U17 draw with Botswana in Cosafa opener

Full Time

Botswana 1( Phillip Kaku 76′) -1 Malawi Madalitso Mwachumu 5′)

The Malawi U17 national team on Wednesday afternoon gave away a 1-0 first half lead to draw one-all with  Botswana in their 2021 U17 Youth Championship Cosafa first match at the Setsoto Stadium in Maseru.

The Junior Flames scored through Madalitso Mwachumu at five minutes and they continued to pressurise to extend the lead but were not lucky enough.

Botswana were then awarded a penalty 14 minutes before the final whistle after defender Happy Mphepo’s handled in the box and captain Phillip Kaku’s made no mistake from the spot kick to make it 1-1.

Speaking after the match, head coach Deklerk Msakakuona said  the boys gave a wonderful performance in their first match and they are going to do everything possible to win their second match against Angola to make it to the next round.

“We were leading in the better part of the game but conceded towards the end of the game. We can’t blame the boys because being new in the team, they  did a good job, only that a small mistake has costed us.

“We had alot of chances but we missed them. As a team, we are going to work on our weaknesses and capitalise on our strengths as we face Angola on Sunday because this will be a deciding match if we are to make it to the next stage,” said Msakakuona

Malawi will on Sunday meet Angola in their final group stage match. Top two teams will make it to the semifinals.

Lineup: Happy Mphepo, Watson Lunguni, Hollyce Chuzu, Kondwani Chirwa, Vincent Harrison (Kondwani Kathumba 60′) Blessings Kanowa, Elias Muywanga, Comfort Unyolo (Zanil Jussab 85′), Modric Kambendera, Madalitso Mwachumu, Alex Dzimbiri
