The Malawi U 17 National football will later this month take part in the Cosafa U17 Championship that will hosted by Mauritius.
The Junior Flames have been drawn against Zambia, Madagascar and Mozambique in Group B of the tournament that will be played from July 22-31.
Hosts Mauritius are in Group A and will have to contest with former winners South Africa as well as Namibia and the Seychelles.
The top two nations in each group advance to the semifinals, where the top team in Group A plays the Group B runner-up and the Group B winner faces the second placed side from Group A.
FAM General Secretary Suzgo Nyirenda said that the Malawi team is expected to go into camp next week with more details about the team to be released later.
“As FAM we confirmed our participation having stayed for two years without playing international football at U17 level. We are now working on the budget while the Technical Director Captain John Kaputa is finalising on the technical panel. Players were identified from various junior competitions like the FMB U20 League, Fifa U15 league, Copa Coca-Cola and Airtel Rising stars .
“By next week we will have a clear position on the squad. But as FAM we will try our best to send the team to Mauritius as this gives us an opportunity to assemble and expose a group of youngsters as we embark on a rebuilding exercise of the national team following poor performances recently,” said Nyirenda
Malawi took part in the last Cosafa U 17 Championship in Zimbabwe in 20104 and finished fourth. The team’s best performance in the competition was a gold medal when Malawi hosted the competition in 2001.
