Malawi’s Under-15 boys’ and girls’ teams have advanced to the semifinals of the 2025 CAF African Schools Championship in Cape Town, South Africa, where they will face Zambia this afternoon from 3pm.
The qualification comes after Malawi defeated Botswana in their second Group C matches at Idas Valley Stadium on Saturday.
The boys’ team secured a 1-0 victory courtesy of a 20th-minute strike from Innocent Jauma, who tapped in a well-placed pass from Takudzwa Maluwa. The result ensured Malawi finished top of Group C with six points after also beating Lesotho on Friday.
The girls’ team also progressed in style, beating Botswana 2-0 to seal their semifinal spot. Tryness Chawala opened the scoring in the 30th minute before Menini Kapasule doubled the lead four minutes later.
Speaking ahead of the semifinals, boys’ coach Joseph Malizani said the improvement shown against Botswana gives them confidence going into the clash against Zambia.
“Tactically we improved against Botswana. We need that kind of character when meeting strong teams, and it shows we can perform better in our semifinal match against Zambia,” he said.
Girls’ coach Bridget Chirwa acknowledged the challenge Zambia will pose but expressed readiness for the contest.
“We expect a tough game against Zambia, but the girls are ready for the display,” she said.
Malawi will be aiming to reach the finals in both categories as the tournament continues this afternoon.
