Malawi teams shine on Day one at CAF Schools qualifiers

The Malawi national schools under 15 boys and girls teams shone on the first day of  the CAF African Schools Championship COSAFA qualifiers tournament, which is currently underway in Waives Bay, Namibia.

The Boys teams beat Namibia 6-0 before beating Lesotho 4-0 to go top of group A with six points.

They just need a draw in their last match against  Zambia to confirm their place in the semifinals.

On the other hand, the girls team drew 2-2 with Namibia before beating Lesotho 5-0 and lead group A on goal difference as they are tied with Namibia on four points.

Malawi are expected to collect free points on Saturday as Zambia girls are yet to show up for the tournament and that will see them qualify for the semifinal as group winners with seven points.

Moses Arthur Chimbetete, the boys’ coach said : “ We pushed the boys to work hard by pressing and retaining the ball, which resulted in scoring opportunities and the team’s victory by a wide margin.

“The secret behind it, is the unity of purpose; the boys have been good; all we needed was to execute the tactics that we taught them during training.”

The girls’ coach, Bridget Chirwa said : “I  emotionally and physically prepared the team so that they should be able to defeat their opponents and score goals. In the second game, we looked at the mistakes that were made in the first game and encouraged the girls to put in much effort so that they should not concede goals again.”
