Malawi out of Cosafa U20 tourney

Zambia 2 (Jimmy Mukeya 21′ 67′)-0 Malawi

The Malawi U-20 National Team are out this year’s Cosafa Under 20 Championship, which is also being used as a qualifier for the 2021 U20 Africa Cup of Nations, after a 2-0 loss to Zambia on Wednesday afternoon.

Malawi needed to secure an outright win over the Young Chipolopolo to lead group B on head-to-head count and advance to semifinals.

But a Jimmy Mukeya’s brace brought Malawi’s hopes to an end.

Mukeya scored his first goal at 21 minutes and Zambia led 1-0 at half time.

He claimed his brace in the 67th minute when headed in a John Chishimba’s set piece.

Coach Patrick Mabedi said it is disappointing for the team to booted out in group stages.

“It’s been a disappointing experience.  We tried to play but we failed because the boys were panicking and it’s only towards the end that they realised that it’s a must win game and started attacking.

“The tournament has been a great learning process for us and we have learnt in a hard way to utilize all our chances because our friends had few chances but they converted two of them while we failed.

Zambia will face Group A winners Mozambique in the semifinal while Namibia, who have finished as second best team after a 1-0 Victory over Comoros, will meet group C winners Angola.

The two finalists from the tournament will automatically qualify for the 2021 U20 Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted by Mauritania.

Lineup: Hastings Banda, Zebron Kalima (Emmanuel Saviel 59′), Blessings Mpokera, Hadji Wali, David Daudi, Stanley Biliati, Maxwell Paipi (Patrick Mwaungulu 53′), Josephy Balakasi, Yamikani Mologeni, Chikondi Mbeta, Lanjesi Nkhoma
