Malawi finishes Fourth at Cosafa U17

Full Time
Malawi 1 (Andrew Lameck 1′)- 2 Angola (Jeremias Kossa 10′, Custodio Hequele 41’)

The Malawi U17 National team have finished 4th at the Cosafa Youth Championship in South Africa following their 2-1 loss over Angola in the 3rd place play-off match on Sunday morning.

Andrew Lameck scored Malawi’s only goa just a minute into the match but Jeremias Kossa equalised for Angola 9 minutes later.

Custodio Hequele scored  Angola’s winning goal three minutes before half time.

Malawi Coach Deklerk Msakakuona attributed team’s 4th place finish to the devastating losses against Zambia and Angola.

“We have played against better sides than us and that’s why we have finished on 4th position. The two losses against Zambia and Angola contributed alot because we lost with  big margins but that’s football.

“We will go back to the drawing board and plan for the future because we have about 10 players in the squad who will be eligible to play next year so we will just beef up the team with few players,” he said.

In the final match, hosts South Africa beat defending champions Zambia 4-2 on post-match penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

Both Zambia and South Africa have  qualified for the 2021 CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations which will be hosted by Morroco.

Lineup: Alex Dzimbiri, Innocent Sikwese ( James Chomba 51), Cliff Mbewe, Andrew Lameck, Steve Banda, Samson Zakeyu, McDonald Chiwanda, Yankho Chitembeya ( Enock Dumuza 31’), Prince Minandi, Islam Mayiwa, Chifundo Mphasi.
