Malawi finishes 7th at Beach AFCON

Malawi National Beach Soccer Team secured seventh position at the CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations  Egypt 2024 following 6-5 victory over neighbours Tanzania in the 7/8 place playoff.

Issac Kajamu scored the winner in extra time after the two teams were tied 5-all in regulation time.

Kajamu walked away with the man of the match award after scoring four goals while Sandramu Sadi scored a brace.

This was the team’s only win at the tournament following losses to defending champions Senegal, Mozambique and Mauritania in group stages.

Mozambique ended on the 6th place after losing 5-3 to Ghana .

Senegal beat Egypt 2-1 to book a final showdown with debutants Mauritania who saw-off Morocco 7-4 in the semifinals.

The final and third-place play-off, between Egypt, the hosts, and Morocco will be played on Saturday.

Malawi Coach Willy Kumilambe was happy that his boys savaged some pride.

“The boys showed character. Just like in the first game which we lost narrowly against Mozambique we showed hunger to win. They came out of their shell to play the game. I don’t know why the same was not applied against Senegal and Mauritania.

“Despite  failing to go beyond the group stages, we go back home wiser and more knowledgeable than before and we will build on this exposure and experience for the future,” he said.
