A brace from Wongani Lungu inspired FCB Nyasa Big Bullets into the final of the Castel Challenge Cup following a 2–0 victory over his former side Mzuzu City Hammers at Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday.
Buoyed by last week’s upset win over holders Mighty Wanderers, the Northern Region side arrived in Blantyre aiming to spring another surprise against the Reds. However, Bullets asserted their authority late in the first half when Lungu struck at the stroke of half time to give the hosts the lead.
The 23 year old completed his brace in the 72nd minute to seal Bullets’ passage into the final, where they will face Goshen City Dedza Dynamos. Dedza booked their final berth after edging Blue Eagles 5–3 on post match penalties at the same venue on Saturday.
Bullets interim head coach Gilbert Chirwa hailed his side’s determination after the match.
“We showed our desire to win throughout the game and this is a deserved victory for the team. We are not relenting as we prepare to face Dedza Dynamos in the final,” said Chirwa.
Mzuzu City Hammers assistant coach Lazarus Nyemera praised his players despite the defeat.
“Our campaign has come to an end today, but we are going out with our heads held high. We believe we will come back stronger,” he said.
The Castel Challenge Cup final will be played on 21 February at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
