Jnr Flames start with win

Malawi 1 (Yamikani Mologeni 90+4′)-0 Comoros

Malawi Under 20 National Football team left it late to score with almost the last kick of the game to beat Comoros 1-0 in their opening game of the COSAFA Qualifiers for TOTAL U-20 AFCON, Mauritania 2021 in Port Elizabeth on Friday afternoon.

Yamikani Mologeni scored the winner four minutes into stoppage time to give Malawi three points.

Malawi dominated the match and created more scoring opportunities with 15 shots but were frustrated by Comoros Keeper Guarino Kary, who was voted man of the mat

Mabedi was happy with the hard earned 3 points but was quick to say that his side need to work on utilizing goal scoring chances.

“We started very slow but our opponents prepared very well because last year we beat them 4-0 and I think our players had the mentality that it’s going to be an easy game. But they made us ran for the three points.

“Second half we did very well after changing some tactics and thats why we got a goal in the last minute. We had a very good organisation at the back but we need to go work on our finishing because we created a lot of chances but failed to score,” said Mabedi.

In another group B match Zambia beat Namibia 1-0.

Malawi will next play Namibia on Monday before facing Zambia two days later.

Lineup: Hastings Banda, Innocent Shema, Hadji Wali, David Daudi, Emmanuel Saviel (Zebron Kalima 40′), Aubrey Maloya, Stanley Biliati (Andrew Sikola 84′), Josephy Balakasi, Yamikani Mologeni, Zizwa Hanjahanja (Lanjesi Nkhoma 46′), Patrick Mwaungulu.
