Heavyweights Set for Fierce NDL Matchweek One Battles

Seasoned football sides Mighty Tigers and Mzuzu City Hammers, both relegated from the 2025 Super League season, begin their quest for an immediate return to top-flight football as the NBS Bank National Division League (NDL) Matchweek One continues this weekend.

Mighty Tigers, relegated from the elite league for the first time in their history, will face newly promoted Chilobwe United at Mpira Stadium on Sunday in what promises to be a stern test for both sides. While Tigers will be aiming to assert their experience and superiority, Chilobwe United will be eager to prove that their promotion was deserved as they chase top-flight football.

The standout fixture of the weekend will see Mzuzu City Hammers host fellow former Super League side Bangwe All Stars at Rumphi Stadium on Saturday.

Mzuzu City Hammers enter the competition as immediate relegates from the elite division, while Bangwe All Stars, who finished seventh in the inaugural NDL season, will rely on their second-tier experience as they push for promotion.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Changalume Barracks, champions of the Eastern Region Football League, will host Northern Region champions Embangweni FC at Zomba Stadium in a battle between ambitious new entrants.

Former elite league side Songwe Border United will travel to Balaka Stadium to face experienced NDL campaigners Ntaja United, while Sunday will also see FOMO FC host Ndirande Stars at Mulanje Park.

The second season of the league was officially launched last Sunday at Owen Malijani Stadium in Mchinji, where newly promoted Extreme FC secured a 1-0 victory over Namitete Zitha, courtesy of Beston Jimu’s historic first goal of the season.

This season has received a major boost after NBS Bank increased sponsorship from K270 million to K530 million, significantly enhancing competition incentives.

Each participating team will receive K20 million in subvention, along with two sets of uniforms, while the champions will earn K25 million, with runners-up and third-place finishers receiving K12.5 million and K7.5 million respectively.
