Happy Scorchers Day

The Malawi Women’s National Football, the Scorchers have clinched their  first ever Cosafa Women’s Championship after beating Zambia 2-1 at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria, South Africa on Sunday.

This was a perfect Mother’s Day gift to all mothers in Malawi.

The Scorchers have won the tournament with 100 percent record after winning all the five matches.

The final  match was destined for extra- time after Agness Phiri canceled out Asimenye Simwaka’s 34th minute opener.

But Sabina Thom showed her class when she scored the winner in stoppage time  planting it home with great precision as she gave Zambia goalkeeper Leticia Lungu no chance.

The Scorchers held on for the famous victory.

Buoyed by the presence of Football Association of Malawi ( FAM) President Walter Nyamilandu Manda and his first vice President Jabba Alide,  the Scorchers turned Lucas Moripe Stadium into a theater of celebrations.

Head Coach Lovemore Fazili said it was mission accomplished.

“We came here for a purpose and we have done it. The players worked very hard to get the Cosafa Cup gold.

“This achievement is for everyone, the players and all Malawians for supporting us, ” said Fazili.

Meanwhile,  striker Temwa Chawinga has won the Cosafa Player- of- Tournament after helping the Scorchers to win gold. She also  won the Golden Boot Award with nine goals.

From the group stage, Malawi players won player- of- the match awards in all the five matches.  Chawinga won two player-of-the-match awards while Simwaka, Thom and Madyina Ngulube won the award once each.

Chawinga was also excited with double glory.

“We wanted it more than Zambia and we deserved to win it. We did everything to get it so we are very happy, ” she said.

During the group stage, Malawi beat South Africa 4-3 in the opening match before registering 8-0  and 3-1 victories  over eSwatini and Madagascar respectively.

Malawi had to come from behind to beat Mozambique 2-1 in the semifinals.  In total,  the Scorchers have scored 19 goals and conceded six goals in five matches.
