Govt Commits Flames Extra Funding

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) would like to inform the football stakeholders that the Government has committed to provide extra budgetary financing for the Malawi Men’s Senior National Football Team to fulfil the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

In view of this development FAM wishes to advise Malawians that the Flames will proceed with preparations for the back to back fixtures against Ivory Coast.

“Having received this assurance of funding, the locally based players who assembled for camp training have been booked to travel to South Africa on Wednesday 6th October 2021 where they will team up with the foreign based players.

“FAM is very grateful of this valuable support and appreciates the sacrifice that the Malawi Government has made to bail out the Malawi National team.

“This demonstrates strong desire by the Malawi Government to develop Malawi football so that the Flames excel in international competitions,” said FAM General Secretary Alfred Gunda.

Flames Assistant Coach Lovemore Fazili left on Tuesday and is expected to start working with the foreign based players on Wednesday Morning.

As of Tuesday afternoon all South African based players had joined camp at Hyde Park hotel in Johannesburg.

Mozambique based midfielder John Banda and Europe based duo of Francisco Madinga and Charles Petro will join the team on Wednesday.

Simba SC due of Peter Banda and Duncan Nyoni joined the team in Malawi and will travel with the rest of the group from Blantyre on Wednesday

Malawi host Ivory Coast on Friday in Johannesburg before facing them again three days later in Benin.
