Fazili Targets Strong WAFCON Build Up in Tanzania

Scorchers head coach Lovemore Fazili says Malawi’s upcoming international friendly matches against Tanzania and Ghana have come at the right time as the team steps up preparations for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

“These friendlies are coming at the right time while we are preparing for WAFCON, and I am happy we have the games during the FIFA calendar,” said Fazili.

Malawi National Women’s Football Team will face Tanzania on Wednesday, 3 June 2026, before taking on Ghana on Saturday, 6 June 2026, with both matches scheduled to be played in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The two matches will be the Scorchers’ third and fourth international friendlies this year, after facing Australia and India at the FIFA Series tournament earlier in the year.

Fazili said the Scorchers will approach the matches with a competitive mindset and a clear purpose.

“We have to win these games, and we also need to have very good performances. We will go with a purpose, not just to play friendly games, but to achieve something out of these matches,” he said.

The coach expects tough tests from both opponents, who have also qualified for WAFCON.

“These are tough encounters against good teams that have also qualified for WAFCON. We played Ghana last year and the game was tough, so we know it is going to be another tough game,” said Fazili.

Fazili also confirmed that star forwards Temwa Chawinga and Tabitha Chawinga are expected to be available after missing the FIFA Series tournament in Kenya through injury.

“Yes, I am 100 percent sure they are coming. They did not show up for the FIFA Series because they were both injured, but this time around they are coming, which is good for us as a team and as a country,” he said.

The last time the Scorchers faced Tanzania was in September 2022 at the COSAFA Women’s Championship, where Malawi lost 3-1. The Scorchers also lost to Ghana by the same margin in an international friendly played in Morocco.

The scorchers will begin their preparations today at Mpira Village.
