Fazili Backs Scorchers to Rise Again After COSAFA Group A Draw

Scorchers head coach Lovemore Fazili says his side is confident of building on past success against South Africa after the two teams were drawn together again in Group A of the COSAFA Women’s Championship.

Fazili was reacting to the draw conducted by the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations at its headquarters in South Africa on Wednesday.

The Malawi Scorchers will also face Angola and Lesotho in Group A as they bid to lift their second COSAFA title.

“It is a good draw. Draws are always like that, but what is important is to prepare very well because all the teams in the group are good and we expect tough matches,” said Fazili.

“With good preparation, we believe we can progress to the knockout stages.”

Malawi famously opened their 2023 COSAFA campaign with a 4–3 victory over South Africa before going on to beat Zambia in the final to claim their maiden COSAFA Women’s Championship title.

The coach added that the experience gained from that historic triumph will be crucial as the Scorchers look to navigate another demanding group.

A 32 member provisional squad is currently in camp at Chiwembe preparing for the tournament, which will run from 18 February to 1 March 2026. The competition had initially been scheduled for November last year but was rescheduled due to other commitments.
