Scorchers Head Coach Lovemore Fazili and team captain Tabitha Chawinga will represent Malawi at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations group stage draw scheduled for Thursday in Morocco.
The draw will determine Malawi’s opponents for their historic debut at the continental finals.
Speaking ahead of the draw, Fazili said the outcome would guide the team’s preparations as they plan for the tournament.
“I am expecting tough matches, but good preparations will help us and show us where we are heading. We have to get maximum points from the group and then fight for a place in the semi finals so that we can qualify for the World Cup,” said Fazili.
Chawinga said the Scorchers are ready for any opponent they may be drawn against.
“We cannot choose which team to face, but we just have to prepare for every team because this is war now. These are not friendly games, it is a competition, so there is no weak team and we have to focus on our preparations,” she said.
Malawi qualified for the WAFCON finals in October after defeating Angola 2-0 on aggregate.
The tournament will also serve as Africa’s qualification pathway to the 2026 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with the top four teams securing automatic qualification.
