FAM National Women’s Championship week 2 preview

The FAM National Women’s Championship goes into second week with three matches lined up as the chase for knockout stages slots gathers momentum.

After failing to meet last Sunday due to Cyclone Freddy-induced heavy rains that hit Southern Malawi, Blantyre based Group B teams Ntopwa and Evirom will meet at Mpira Stadium on Saturday.

On paper, Ntopwa are favourites as they dominated Everom in their two meetings in the Southern Region League beating them 7-0 on both occasions.

In the Central Region, Civil Service United Women will play their first group B match on Saturday as they host Moyale Sisters at Civo Stadium.

Moyale are coming from a 2-1 loss against Ascent Academy last week and will be looking for their first ever win in the National Championship as they also lost all their group stage matches in the inaugural 2021 competition.

DD Sunshine have travelled to the north to face CY Sisters in a repeat of last year’s Group B encounter which ended in 1-all draw at Mzuzu Stadium.

The match ended prematurely following CY Sisters’ protest of a penalty awarded to DD Sunshine in the dying minutes of the match, an act which cost them 3 points.

The match between Ascent Academy and Ntopwa which was scheduled for Ascent Ground on Sunday has been postponed to a later date to allow Ntopwa have enough time for preparation as they only started training on Thursday because of the rains.

Nyasa Big Bullets Women, Destiny Academy, Topik and Ascent Academy are on bye  this week.

DD Sunshine lead Group A  with 3 points following their 4-0 win over Topik last weekend while Nyasa Big Bullets Women are second having defeated Destiny Academy 2-0 in the competition’s opening match.

Ascent Academy lead group B with 3 points
