The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and the entire refereeing community are mourning the death of Chris Kalichero, who passed away today, 4th August 2025. Kalichero was the General Secretary of the National Football Referees Committee.
Born on 20th September 1956, Kalichero began his refereeing journey in 1988 in Mangochi, before moving to Zomba, where he began officiating high-profile matches. His passion for the game later took him to Lilongwe, where he continued to serve the game as a respected match official.
After retiring from active refereeing in 2009, Kalichero dedicated his life to the development and administration of refereeing in Malawi. He served as General Secretary for the Central Region Referees Committee for eight years, before being elevated to the position of General Secretary of the National Football Referees Committee under FAM, a role in which he remained actively engaged until his passing.
His vast knowledge and leadership in the game were recently recognized when he was co-opted into the FAM Competitions and Marketing Sub-Committee, further highlighting his enduring impact on Malawian football.
Kalichero leaves behind a legacy of discipline and mentorship of refereeing in the country. He will be remembered as a passionate and dedicated football servant whose contribution helped shape the landscape of officiation in Malawi.
