The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Executive Committee has approved the introduction of a Reserve League effective from the 2027/2028 season following a recommendation from the League Development Committee.
The decision was made during the Executive Committee meeting held on Saturday, 9 May 2026.
The Reserve League will provide a structured and competitive platform for reserve teams affiliated to clubs participating in the Elite League during a particular season. The initiative forms part of FAM’s broader strategy aimed at strengthening player development, enhancing competition structures and creating a clear progression pathway for emerging talent.
Under the approved framework, relegation from the Elite League shall automatically result in the relegation of the respective club’s reserve side from the Reserve League.
FAM is currently engaging potential partners for the competition as part of efforts to ensure the league’s sustainability, competitiveness and long-term success.
In the interim, for the 2026/27 season ,FAM will introduce a Reserve Cup competition to provide reserve teams with competitive match opportunities ahead of the full implementation of the Reserve League in the 2027/2028 season.
The Association believes the initiative will play a critical role in talent development, player transition and the overall growth of football in Malawi.
