The Scorchers, Malawi’s Women’s National Football Team, have made history — qualifying for their first-ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a commanding 2–0 victory over Angola at Bingu National Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
It was a perfect afternoon for football — the stands painted in red, green, and black, as thousands of fans filled the stadium. The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) had opened the gates for free, and Malawians responded in numbers, creating an electric atmosphere that pushed the team from the first whistle to the last.
The Scorchers showed early intent, pressing high and controlling possession. Forward Faith Chimzimu, who would later become the heroine of the day, tested the Angolan goalkeeper twice in the opening minutes. Angola, though shaken, threatened on the counter and earned a penalty in the 40th minute — but Patricia Seteco’s effort struck the upright, to the relief of the home crowd.
At halftime, the match remained goalless. Head Coach Lovemore Fazili made tactical substitutions, introducing Leticia Chinyamula and Chisomo Banda to inject pace and creativity — a move that turned the tide.
In the 82nd minute, captain Tabitha Chawinga produced a moment of brilliance on the left flank, beating her marker and squaring a low cross for Faith Chimzimu, who slotted home to ignite wild celebrations.
Barely a minute later, Chimzimu struck again — calmly finishing to double the lead and send the home crowd into a frenzy.
When the final whistle blew, emotions overflowed — tears, hugs, and songs of triumph echoed through the stadium. Malawi had finally done it — a dream long deferred turned into history.
Speaking after the match, a jubilant Fazili praised his players’ commitment and the support behind the team:
“I’m extremely happy with the results. It wasn’t easy — Angola is a good side. But credit to my players and the entire technical panel, especially our captain, Tabitha Chawinga, for her leadership. I also thank the Football Association and our sponsors, National Bank of Malawi, for their investment in women’s football.”
Captain Tabitha Chawinga described the qualification as a proud moment for the team and the nation:
“We are going to Morocco next year, and we are proud to make history. We thank FAM for the support and Malawians for believing in us — this victory is for you.”
With this triumph, Malawi joins Africa’s elite in women’s football and will represent the nation at the 2026 WAFCON in Morocco — a new chapter in Malawian football history.
