Songwe Border United’s lead will be on the line when they host second-placed Extreme FC in a top-of-the-table NBS Bank National Division League clash at Karonga Stadium on Sunday.
A win for Songwe will see them maintain their place at the summit, while victory for Extreme will take them back to the top of the table.
Extreme briefly led the table after Matchweek Two, but dropped to second last week despite moving to nine points. Songwe Border United, who had occupied second place for two consecutive matchweeks, moved to the summit after beating Embangweni United 2-1 to reach 10 points.
A defeat for Extreme could see them drop from second place if third-placed Ndirande Stars win their Saturday fixture against eighth-placed Mzuzu City Hammers at Rumphi Stadium.
Extreme are only one point ahead of Ndirande Stars and two points above fourth-placed Embangweni United, who open Matchweek Five on Friday against 11th-placed Bangwe All Stars at Rumphi Stadium.
On Saturday, bottom-placed Changalume Barracks, who have one point, will host Mighty Tigers at Zomba Stadium. Tigers are ninth with four points and will be looking to move away from the relegation zone.
Other Sunday fixtures will see 10th-placed Namitete Zitha hosting fifth-placed FOMO FC at Owen Malijani Stadium in Mchinji, while Ntaja United will host sixth-placed Chilobwe United at Balaka Stadium. Ntaja and Chilobwe are both tied on five points, separated only by goal difference.
With four matches played by each team, the race for the Season Two title remains wide open among the front runners, while the bottom four sides face a tough task to move out of the relegation zone.
Mzuzu City Hammers and Mighty Tigers, who both dropped from the elite league, are currently looking over their shoulders as they sit close to the bottom four. Both teams have four points, one ahead of 10th-placed Namitete Zitha, two above Bangwe All Stars and three ahead of bottom-placed Changalume Barracks.
The middle pack also remains tight, with FOMO FC, Chilobwe United and Ntaja United all still within reach of the top three places.
