Silver Strikers Ladies forward Deborah Henry continues to shine in front of goal, having scored eight goals in six matches, making her the leading goalscorer in the race for the Golden Boot award of the inaugural National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Women’s Premiership.
Hot on her heels are Malawi Scorchers internationals Leticia Chinyamula and Mayamiko Mkandawire of Ascent Soccer, who have each scored five goals, while Kondawo Banda of Kukoma Ntopwa Women and Vanessa Issa of FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Women follow closely with four goals apiece.
On three goals each are Mary Chavinda (Bullets Women), Maurine Phiri (Moyale Sisters), and Tawina Kawaga (Mighty Wanderers Queens).
Nine players have netted two goals each: Ireen Khumalo and Linda Manda (Silver Strikers Ladies), Fatima Lali (Ascent Soccer), Sabina Thom, Fazila Chiyembekezo, and Catherine Kachala (MDF Lionesses), Chikondi Mgodi (Bullets Women), Angella Mwalilino (MK Academy), and Vitumbiko Mkandawire (Civil Service United Women).
From her eight goals, Henry has registered two braces, including one in Match Week 2 during Silver’s 2-1 victory over Ascent Soccer, where she was named Player of the Match. She repeated the feat in the 6-1 win over Topik Academy and again starred in the 3-1 triumph over Kukoma Ntopwa Women, earning another Player of the Match award for her outstanding display.
As a team, Silver Strikers Ladies remain unmatched at the top of the log, boasting a 100% winning record with 18 points from six games. The Bankers have also proven to be the most prolific side, scoring 18 goals and conceding just four.
They are followed by Ascent Soccer, who have 13 points, 13 goals scored, and only three conceded. FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Women, in 5th place, have netted 14 goals while conceding five, whereas MDF Lionesses, in 4th position, have scored 10 goals and let in three.
The inaugural season has already produced moments of brilliance, with three players etching their names into the league’s early history books with hat-tricks.
Ascent Soccer’s Leticia Chinyamula was the first to hit three in a single game when she inspired her side to a commanding 6-0 victory over Topik Academy — a performance that underlined her clinical finishing and leadership in attack.
A week later, Kukoma Ntopwa’s Kondawo Banda replicated the feat, scoring all three goals in a 3-0 triumph over Topik Academy, showcasing her sharp instincts and composure in front of goal.
The third hat-trick came courtesy of Maurine Phiri of Moyale Sisters, who powered her team to a 4-1 win against MK Academy, combining pace and precision to complete one of the standout individual performances of the campaign so far.
