Chombo Eyes Positive Start in U20 World Cup Qualifiers

Malawi U20 National Women’s Coach Maggie Chombo says her charges must get a result in Tuesday’s FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup preliminary round qualifier away to South Sudan to ease the pressure in the return leg.

Chombo stressed that winning the first game will give the girls the confidence they need to handle the challenge of playing both legs away from home.

“I have told my girls that we have to fight for a win tomorrow so that we shouldn’t be under any pressure,” she said.

On the tactical approach, Chombo explained that Malawi will stick to their short passing game to counter South Sudan’s physical advantage.

“Our opponents have a height advantage over us, so we have told the girls to avoid high balls. With the high temperatures, we’ll also avoid long balls to make sure we don’t burn out,” Chombo added.

The Young Scorchers will play the first leg on Tuesday before returning to action on Friday for the decisive second leg, both games to be staged in Juba.
