Chilumba Barracks on Saturday won the Simama Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) Premier League championship to earn promotion into the top-flight TNM Super League.
The Karonga-based Malawi Defence Force (MDF) side has 83 points with two games remaining to wind up the league.
They needed a point to seal the title and were awarded their game against Nkhata Bay United which failed to take place following United’s failure to show up for the match in Chilumba..
NRFA fixtures secretary Ollens Msonda confirmed that the game had been awarded to Chilumba by a 2-0 margin as per rules and regulations governing the league.
Chilumba have joined Dwangwa United and Max Bullets who emerged champions in the Central and Southern regional leagues respectively.
Second-placed Karonga United played out a goalless draw against Kawaza. The results means that Karonga have 76 points from 32 games and can only go as far as 79 points.
Chilumba team manager Kazizwa Banda said he was happy that their dream of earning promotion into the flagship league had come true.
“We are now done with our campaign. We thank God for the success. It was not that easy. We will now shift focus to preparing for the Super League,” he said.
NRFA chairperson Lameck Khonje has since hailed Chilumba for their consistent performance.
