NBS Bank NDL Heads Into Action-Packed Matchweek Two

Chilobwe United will be looking to bounce back from their opening defeat when they host FOMO FC in Matchweek Two of the NBS Bank National Division League at Mpira Stadium on Friday.

The Blantyre-based side lost 3-2 to seasoned campaigners Mighty Tigers last Sunday in their debut appearance in the second-tier league, but head coach Elvis Kafoteka said there were positives to take from the performance.

Kafoteka, a former Malawi international, told the club’s media that although the result was disappointing, he was satisfied with the fighting spirit shown by his players.

He said the technical panel had identified areas that need improvement and will use the lessons from the Mighty Tigers match as they prepare for FOMO, who opened their campaign with a goalless draw against Ndirande Stars.

Following the opening round, Chilobwe United sit ninth on the table, while FOMO are seventh.

Elsewhere, leaders Mighty Tigers will face Bangwe All Stars on Sunday at Mpira Stadium. Tigers top the table on goal difference after sharing three points with Mzuzu City Hammers, Embangweni United and Extreme FC.

Bangwe All Stars, who lost 2-1 to Mzuzu City Hammers at Chitipa Stadium last weekend, will be aiming for their first points of the season as they continue their push for a return to the top flight.

Third-placed Embangweni United will host Ntaja United at Rumphi Stadium after making a winning start to life in the NDL with victory over Changalume Barracks.

Extreme FC, who beat Namitete Zitha 1-0 in the season opener, will return to Owen Malijani Stadium to face fellow debutants Changalume Barracks in another interesting Matchweek Two fixture.

There will also be an all Season One contest between Ndirande Stars and Namitete Zitha at Mpira Stadium on Saturday, while Songwe Border will host Mzuzu City Hammers at Karonga Stadium in a meeting between two sides that featured in the 2025 elite league.

Fourteen goals have been scored so far in the opening round, with Mighty Tigers’ 3-2 win over Chilobwe United and the 2-2 draw between Ntaja United and Songwe Border producing the highest scoring matches.

After a competitive inaugural campaign, the second season of the NBS Bank National Division League has already shown signs of another exciting race, with teams fighting for the title, three promotion slots into the FDH Bank Premiership and survival in the second tier.
