Beach Eagles are HTD Beach Soccer National Champions

Beach Eagles on Sunday  beat Nyasa 10-3 to win the K20 million HTD Beach Soccer National Championship at Sunbird Livingstonia Beach in Salima.

For being the champions, Eagles, a team from Nkhatabay received K3 million while Nyasa from Mangochi received K1 million for finishing second.

Nkopola beat Deep Bay 12-1 to finish third and they went away with K500 000.

In individual awards, Frank Mwenelupembe of Deep Bay was voted as Player of the tournament while Aubrey Nkhumbula of Eagles won Golden Boot Award with 13 goals.

Both received K100 000 each.

Beach Eagles, reached semi finals after beating Deep Bay 8-5 in the semi final while Nyasa beat Nkopola 8-7.

In the final game, Eagles won first period 5-1 before finishing the second period at 7-3.

They scored three goals in the last period to finish the game at 10-3.

he national championship attracted six teams and was played from Saturday to Sunday.

Speaking during the prize presentation, Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) Board Chairperson Sunduzwayo Madise hailed HTD for sponsoring the competition.

“We are very happy and we urge more companies to complement the government’s efforts to develop the game,” Madise said.

Taking his turn, Football Association of Malawi (Fam) president Walter Nyamilandu said the competition lived up to its expectation.

“We have watched great talent since the tournament started. As a country, we have potential and we will try to take the game to the next level,” Nyamilandu said.

The national championship attracted six teams namely Eagles, Nyasa, Nkopola, Deep Bay, Munali and Chipala.

HTD Limited Managing Director Harris Sidik said the company was satisfied with the level of competition in the inaugural tournament.

Several high profile people watched the national championship.

Live music performances from Zeze and Kelly Kay spiced up the two-day national championship.
