Amendments to Laws of the Game for 2025/26

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) wishes to notify all stakeholders of key amendments to the Laws of the Game, which will take effect immediately and be applied from the second round of the Super League season. These adjustments are intended to improve fairness, enhance the flow of play, and ensure alignment with FIFA standards

 Key Amendments

  • Goalkeeper 8 – Second Rule: Goalkeepers must release the ball within 8 seconds of gaining possession. Failure to do so will result in a corner kick for the opposing team.
  • Captains – Referee Interactions: Only team captains can approach referees to dispute or discuss decisions. Non-captains attempting to influence decisions may receive a yellow card.
  • Penalty Kick “Double-Touch” Rule: Accidental double-touches during penalty kicks will result in a retake, while deliberate double-touches will award the defending team an indirect free kick.
  • The Ball in and out of Play: Indirect free kick and no disciplinary sanction when a team official, substitute, substituted or sent-off player or player who is temporarily off the field of play touches the ball as it is leaving the field of play and there is no intention to interfere unfairly

Implementation and Expectations

We expect all stakeholders under Football Association of Malawi to familiarize themselves with the amended laws herein attached and strictly enforce these amendments for smooth and fair game. The Football Association of Malawi and Member Associations will monitor implementation and address any concerns or queries.
